Accra, October 1, GNA – The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of the Trade Union Congress, Ghana, halted its ongoing strike on Wednesday to facilitate additional talks regarding their service conditions.
The Union’s leadership has called on all members to return to work by Thursday, October 2, 2025.
Anyone who has traveled outside their area of responsibility is required to report by no later than Monday, October 6, 2025.
In September 2025, the Union initiated an ongoing strike to push for improved workplace conditions.
Union members consisted of employees from the Ghana Education Service, Public and Technical Universities, personnel at the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and the Ghana Library Authority.
King James Azortibah, the General Secretary of the Union, mentioned during a press conference that the suspension resulted from a meeting held between the Union, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and employer bodies on Monday, September 29, 2025.
He mentioned that following a highly productive discussion, the involved parties agreed to strive for a friendly resolution to the issues raised by the Union.
“We are scheduled to meet with FWSC on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, to continue discussions, finalize and sign the different service conditions for the affected institutions and TEWU’s TUC membership,” he stated.
King Azortibah stated that the suspension did not mean the strike was canceled.
We also emphasize that no TEWU member or non-teaching employee should face retaliation for exercising their right to strike.
“The union’s leadership will protect any member who encounters discrimination or unjust labor practices from their employer regarding this issue, both now and in the future,” he stated.
He praised all management teams and school principals who have shown cooperation and support throughout the process of resolving their complaints.
We acknowledge their awareness in providing quality educational services in Ghana and for embracing our shared challenges during this time.
“TEWU will stay a lawful union and will keep working towards improved conditions for its members,” he stated.
