Three individuals are said to have lost their lives in a road accident that took place close to the Ogba River bridge within the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
Three individuals, including a commercial motorcyclist widely recognized as an Okada rider, and his two passengers, lost their lives on Monday evening.
At least six individuals narrowly avoided death in an incident that took place on the Siun section of the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State on Monday night.
An eyewitness reported to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday that the driver of an SUV, believed to be a Yahoo Yahoo individual, lost control and collided with an okada rider, resulting in the death of the rider and his passengers.
The person driving the car lost control and struck the Okada rider along with his passenger. He was going at maximum speed, making it very challenging for him to manage the vehicle as it started to swerve.
Nevertheless, associates of the late okada rider went onto the streets to demonstrate against the ongoing fatalities caused by incidents on the Airport Road, asserting that the car driver was involved in Advance Fee Fraud, commonly referred to locally as Yahoo Yahoo.
This is a statement PUNCH Metro was unable to confirm with the police.
However, one of the demonstrators, Abdullahi Usman, stated that the deceased okada rider was their union secretary.
These Yahoo Yahoo guys show no concern for others on the road. The accident was extremely serious. It was the Divisional Police Officer from the Estate Police Station who soothed the anxious feelings.
“We are urging the police to conduct a comprehensive inquiry and hold the perpetrator accountable,” Usman added.
The Federal Road Safety Corps’ Edo Sector Commander, Cyril Matthew Zango, was unavailable for further remarks.
Nevertheless, the Edo State Police Command’s representative, Moses Yamu, verified the incident and mentioned that an inquiry is still underway.
I can assure you that the accident resulted in the death of the Okada rider and his passenger. Nevertheless, an investigation is currently underway to hold anyone responsible accountable.
During the Ogun incident, PUNCH Metro was informed via a traffic report from the state Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency on Tuesday that the accident occurred when two vehicles collided.
TRACE identified the vehicles involved as a Toyota Avensis and a black Lexus, with an eyewitness stating that the accident happened when the Lexus collided with the Toyota from behind.
It stated, “A small RTA took place at Olorunsogo, the northbound section of the Siun–Sagamu highway, on Monday around 1520 hours.”
The vehicles involved include a Toyota Avensis vehicle with the license plate GGE 301 JX and a black Lexus car bearing the plate GGE 210 FV.
The Lexus exceeded the speed limit and collided with the Toyota from behind, as reported by a witness. Six adult men were involved; there were no fatalities or injuries.
TRACE mentioned that the vehicles were subsequently removed from the road to avoid traffic congestion.
This follows several weeks after the Federal Road Safety Corps advised drivers to avoid excessive speed, a major factor in road accidents in Ogun State.
In August, PUNCH Metro stated that four individuals lost their lives and six others were injured in a series of collisions on the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway, which was also associated with excessive speed.
In a separate event, PUNCH Metro stated on Tuesday that a Togolese driver was taken into custody while trying to escape after causing injury to a pedestrian in the Adeniji-Adele region of Lagos State. It was reported that the driver was speeding prior to hitting the pedestrian who was crossing the expressway.
Frequent breakdowns point to continued worries regarding dangerous driving practices, particularly excessive speed, on main highways in the South-West area.
