By Mildred Siabi-Mensah

Agona (WR), Oct. 01, GNA- Mr. Ebenezer Aidoo, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ahanta West, has urged unity to address the problem of unlawful mining in the region.

Mr. Aidoo highlighted the significant effects of illegal mining on the environment and the health of local communities, and urged people in the area to take greater responsibility for environmental protection.

“The water bodies and lands of Ghana, which ought to provide clean drinking water, recreational spaces, food security, and even energy production, are increasingly dying due to the effects of illegal mining and the release of harmful chemicals,” he added.

Currently, the nation is witnessing the birth of unhealthy infants, with recent research findings showing that cocoyam leaves (Kontomire) from regions where these harmful activities are widespread have turned toxic.

The head of the Ahanta West Municipal District stated, “The impact of illegal mining is significant. We all need to unite to combat this destructive crisis.”

Mr. Aidoo, along with the National Security and the Formed Police Unit (FPU) from the Ghana Police Service, conducted a significant operation to curb illegal mining activities (galamsey) within the municipality.

As per the MCE, the joint task force carried out an operation deep inside the Cape Three Points Forest, resulting in the arrest of seven people and the destruction of over ten “Chanfang” devices, often known as “one leg” machines.

Mr. Aidoo reasserted his dedication to safeguarding the environment and enforcing regulations, emphasizing the Assembly’s focus on enduring ecological sustainability and the well-being of the community.
