The leader of the Kome-Shime Traditional Area in the Volta Region, Togbi Amey Zegu II, has strongly urged for a collective effort to combat increasing drug use among young people.

Togbi Zegu combined the festival’s cultural festivities with a pressing call for shared accountability.

He cautioned that drug addiction poses a risk to the future of the region’s youth.

“The same sense of unity that supported our forebears should lead us in facing current difficulties, drawing upon the Ewe people’s historical journey from Notsie to the Volta region,” he stated.

He highlighted that “Unity is our most significant legacy and our most powerful tool.”

Togbi Zegu highlighted the crucial importance of the youth, referring to them as “the energy, creativity, and optimism of today.”

He praised community initiatives like the building of dormitories at Klefe Technical Institute, referring to vocational education as “the foundation of self-reliance and business ventures.”

Referencing recent studies, the leader shared concerning figures: over half of high school students acknowledge consuming alcohol, almost one in five state they have used marijuana, and more than five percent have tried amphetamines.

He warned that instances of tramadol and opioid misuse are increasing consistently.

“These are our sons and daughters. If we lose them to substance abuse, we lose our future,” he cautioned.

In response to the crisis, Togbi Zegu proposed a bold approach, calling for a regional coalition consisting of traditional leaders, parents, teachers, and police to address the issue via education, family guidance, therapy, and recovery programs, stricter regulations on illegal drugs, and increased chances for young people to find jobs and gain training.

He urged the people of Volta to find power in their common past, picturing upcoming celebrations that honor not just bountiful harvests but also the achievements of young people who are strong and free from drugs. “Let us come together through history, mission, and deeds.”
